What is Advent? - The observance of Advent starts four weeks preceding Christmas Day. The Advent tradition was started in the Middle Ages and celebrated by many different Church organizations. Advent is marked by a spirit of expectation, of anticipation, of preparation, of longing. It is a time of preparation for the birth of Jesus by fasting, giving alms and reflection.In today’s culture, Advent can restore Jesus to the center of the Christmas celebration, because on each Advent day the birth of Jesus is talked about. The whole family can participate and make memories that will last a lifetime.
